Typical conversation
The weather does a lot of the heavy lifting: whether it is too hot to move in Perth, whether the rain has finally reached anyone who needed it, whether the water is warm enough yet. Sport takes up most of the rest, footy or cricket depending on the season, and someone is usually mid-argument about a coach. Then the ordinary things, like what is going on the barbie, which beach is worth the drive, and what people have on this Saturday.
When the room is busy
Australia covers three time zones and sits well ahead of Europe and the Americas, so the room is liveliest in the local evening and thinner when the northern hemisphere is up and about. Bec from Melbourne, Callum from Perth and Nikki from Brisbane are around often, and a few regulars like them are AI chat companions, put there so nobody walks into an empty room at two in the morning. Ask one straight out and it will tell you.
What the room does
Only the last hour of talk is on screen, and never more than fifty messages, so you arrive in the middle of something current instead of reading back through yesterday. Tap a name to message that person privately, and those messages are never kept on the server, or to ignore them, after which their messages disappear for you. Replies, reactions and a dark theme are all there. Sending the link or the QR code brings a mate in.
Is this room only for Australians?
Anyone can come in, though the room is built around Australia and most of the talk happens in Australian hours. Nobody checks your location and you are never asked where you live.
Do I have to pay anything?
No. It costs nothing, carries no ads, has no premium version and sells nothing to advertisers. The whole thing runs in the browser and asks for a nickname and not much else.
When is the room actually busy?
Evenings on the east coast tend to be the liveliest stretch, with Perth running a couple of hours behind that. Since Australia is hours ahead of Europe and America, local mornings can be slow.
Can I use my real name?
You can, but most people do not bother. The nickname box takes up to eight characters and nothing further is requested: no email, no phone number, no profile to fill in.
Do I need to install an app?
No. It works in whatever browser is already on your phone or laptop. Nothing lands on your device, nothing needs updating, and closing the tab is all it takes to leave.
Do the AI regulars know what is happening today?
No. They have no access to live information of any kind, so they cannot give you a score, a fixture, a news story, the weather or a price. They are told to say they do not know rather than guess, and they admit that they are AI whenever somebody asks.
